Academics

At NORTHWEST ACADEMY we use multi-model teaching methods which will instill your child with life-long learning skills. The essence of our curriculum is the integrated application of both cognitive (thinking) and emotional (feeling) learning processes.

Cognitive learning is facilitated through problem solving, recall, and application. Social and emotional learning aids in the development of the skills, attitudes, and values necessary to achieve personal goals and understand and manage relationships. We have found that the combination relationship of Northwest Academy's personal growth program and academic curriculum will ultimate enable your child to be receptive to cognitive learning.

Curriculum and Instructional Format

At Northwest Academy our small classes, averaging eight students, ensure that students receive the attention they need and allow for individual direction and structure. This level of interaction enables our students to succeed in the classroom while allowing our instructors to pay close attention to each pupil’s needs and progress.

A multidisciplinary treatment team made up of psychotherapists, teachers, substance abuse counselors, mentors, and family services coordinators regularly assesses each student. From these assessments we develop personalized plans, designed to meet the specific needs of each individual student.

In order to accustom our students to community involvement, we provide opportunities to participate in job shadowing, community service and experiential education. Northwest Academy also provides on-campus life-skill instruction in the form of regular community meetings and instruction in music, art, wood working and photography.

Post-secondary planning

Guidance/College counseling/ SAT/ACT

Preparation and planning for post-Northwest Academy education, training or employment is a major component of our educational program. Students form a plan along with help of our guidance counselors and parents. Our guidance counselors help students through the process of preparing and submitting college entrance applications, and students may visit the colleges to which they have applied and been accepted.

While Students are engaged in a full academic program focusing on the core subject areas they are also working on appropriate classroom behavior, completing assignments on time, and active participation in the classroom process. Students learn what is required to address their learning challenges and, where possible, how to compensate for them.

They expand their understanding of personal learning styles and identify academic strengths and weaknesses. As personal issues are addressed and self-confidence and acceptance increase, students demonstrate increased academic success.
