Personal Growth

Our personal growth curriculum teaches your child to identify and resolve their individual issues and develop positive, healthy lives. Through peer-accountability discussions, personal-growth workshops, and faculty counseling and modeling, your child will examine behavior patterns and learn to make productive choices.

The personal growth curriculum is structured into phases, with a cumulative curriculum designed to build on lessons learned in the earlier phases. The focus on issues through emotional growth experiences is individualized to each student. The emphasis is on accepting responsibility for one's behavior and feelings; building healthy, meaningful relationships; developing a positive value system based on honesty; learning how to set and accomplish goals; and dealing with and resolving underlying feelings and fears. Your son or daughter will resolve issues and come to understand the power their choices have in creating a healthy lifestyle.

Your child will participate in regular peer-group counseling and periodic, personal growth experiences within the year which will maximize success by improving his or her self-esteem and providing tools for coping with life. NWA students gain confidence to accept responsibility and accountability for their actions to begin to model appropriate behavior to younger students and to assume an active leadership role on campus. With their new found confidence and acceptance of their strengths and skills, your child will begin to develop plans and set future goals.

Life Challenge
Near the end of their time at Northwest Academy, students depart on a ten-day Life Challenge journey before returning to campus for their graduation exercises. The Life Challenge is an adventure designed to place the students in the ‘real world’ and give them an opportunity to utilize their newly-acquired tools while challenging themselves physically and emotionally. It includes physical adventure, learning, and community service. The Life Challenge is not a vacation: it is the true culmination of the personal growth journey the students have made at Northwest Academy.
